Alex,

Forgive me, but I take issue with your characterization of "ultra-orthodox" outreach. I am unaware of such an approach among the ultra-orthodox and frankly don't even know to whom you might be referring. Are you speaking about the Toldos Aharon Baal Teshuvah Yeshivah in Meah Shearim? I don't believe there is one. Are you referring to the Niturei Karta BT yeshivah in Monsey? I don't believe that one exists either.

Are you referring to Aish HaTorah, Ohr Someach, Machon Shlomo, Machon Yaakov, Darchei Noam, or Be'er Shmuel in Jerusalem? None of them do as you suggest. I know many folks who've attended and took years to assume full observance and no one nagged them or burdened them. It was their choice to make.

I'm perplexed.

I can't help but think that perhaps your point could have been made just as effectively without knocking down a straw-man in the process.

This is actually a very common situation when people come to religion slowly, just as they enjoy the tradition. The ultra-Orthodox way of burdening baal tshuva with myriad observances doesn't work.

Adorable story, but honestly if I would have done that to my husband he would have been angry. Hints in the underwear drawer???? He would NOT have appreciated...I guess each couple has to know what will work for them. Good Shabbos!
