Please Pray or Say Tehillim for the Residents of Houston

It would be a good idea for other Jews to pray today for the well-being of the Jews in and near Houston, in view of the imminent hurricane threat.

  1. Raquelita, There would be no problem praying for all the people of Houston.

As Jews, we’re considered one family. Just as it’s not unusual to give your family priority in your prayers, so to it’s not unusual for Jews to focus their prayers towards their fellow Jews.

  2. I am not an Orthodox Jew, so excuse me if this question betrays my ignorance, but is there any sort of prohibition against praying for all the people of Houston, Jew and non-Jew alike? I know that many of our prayers ask G-d to watch over the people of Israel, but if you were praying your own prayer in your own words, wouldn’t it be ok to pray for non-Jews too?
Personally, I would find it hard not to pray for non-Jews, since my dad and many other people that I love aren’t Jewish.
