I’m not in the NY area, but I frequently donate blood and platelets at my local center. As indicated, platelets take a while. They do everything they can to make you comfortable. My location offers TVs, VCRs, and DVD players posistioned to watch while donating. I usually bring a good book to read (now currently working my way through Rabbi Telushkin’s “Jewish Literacy.”) It’s a great feeling when you leave knowing how much you do. It takes 6-8 regular (whole blood) donations for one platelet transfusion. A platelet donor can supply 1-3 transfusions in a single donation.
